Beautiful Fake/Manufactured Stone We recently completed this project and took photos of the finished product. After several attempts to get the builder to install any product other than fake stone we agreed to do the work. Generally speaking builders love artificial stone and brick because it is cheap, fast, and looks quite well from a distance when installed. We give no warranty against cracking or water damage when installing this type of stone over a wood framed structure as we are not comfortable with the products produced by artificial stone manufacturers. The typical warranty on any project is only a year however and it is our opinion that you should see no problems for the first few years. Manufactured Stone and Natural Thinstone has its advantages, as the photo below shows you can start your wall rom the top down. The natural thinstone still looks much better since it is natural stone and the shapes and textures are more random and natural while with manufactured stone it is very likely that you will lay the exact same stone many times as this photo shows.

A closer look at manufactured stone. In the center of the photo above you see a stone that is a rust red color and on the edge you see an almost white with little specs of aggregate. Had this been a natural stone you would not see this since natural stone is natural from front to back. A natural product can also be pitched so that the large outcropping shown here would be pitched back to the plane you are working with. Fake stone cannot be pitched for this reason and therefore you get what you see here. Some contractors will actually smear mortar over the edge of the stone and try to hide the aggregate. The thin layer of paint or pigment that is applied over the surface of the immitation stone can rub off if bumped or scrapped. It is our opinion that if you are building a structure using a material that will obviously need repairs in the near future that it would be cheaper and smarter to use siding of some sort. The remodel will be cheaper and not as messy.
